How to protect yourself against online scammers

Before transaction:

This is the most critical period when steps could be taken for you to be more protected.

When enquiring about an item, ask for its real pics before purchasing. This is to ensure that the seller actually possess the item
Check if the seller was ever a deadseller at sgflea here
Ask the seller to sms you his/her account number so that you would have a record of his/her phone number
Bookmark or take note of the seller's blog/website's address
Do not delete their emails before receiving the item
If possible, ask for meet ups and pay the seller only then
If not, ask for registered mails to prevent lost non-trackable mails. It is also to deny any scammers the chance to use "lost mail" as an excuse. Its only $2.24 more
If you have opted for registered mail, ask for a clear snapshot of the receipt with the tracking number
If you have opted for normal mail, ask the seller to send the item at a nearby post office. post boxes outdoors have a higher chance of being lost and addresses written might get smudged during rain

After transaction but before receiving item:

Make sure you do 3,4 and 7 under "before transaction" above
If you opted for registered mail, you can track you item here

If items got lost:

Contact the seller so he/she can also file for lost mail
If you opted for registered mail, simply go here or call the registered mail hotline 6845 6607 or go down to your post office to file for lost article
If you opted for normal mail, you can also go here to enquire about the parcel and a friendly personnel would be in touch with you soon. You can also go down to the post office to file for lost article.
The post office personnel you contacted would search for the article at the headquarter and also at the respective post offices where the parcel could possibly be found
At the same time, visit the seller's website/blog to see if he/she is still selling the item or if there are others commenting about lost mails

If you suspect that you got scammed:

If you

opted for registered mail and never heard from the seller again
still see the items you bought on the seller's web/blog, tried to ask your friend to enquire about it and the seller is still selling the item
tried contacting the seller but he/she basically went mia after you paid
found other victims who were scammed by the seller

You should

Post on Sgflea to warn others of the seller
Report to Sgflea here
Contact the seller via sms, comments and also email
Warn him/her that you would report to the police and try to get your money back
If there is still no response, contact the police

FAQs

I only have a website/blog add, can I still report the seller?

Do not worry, if you have her website or blog add/phone number/home address, the police would be able to track the seller.

Will the police care? Since not a big amount of money is involved.

If I am not wrong, these scams are filed under Breach of Trust. Hence, it is by all means a CRIME and taken seriously. You would need evidence of the scam and if there were more than one victim involved, gather together and report to the police.

However, do not expect much out of it. The scammer might be fined but you might not get your refund back at all. So try to get a refund before reporting.

I have seen many who got their refunds and let the matter go even when they have compelling evidence. I encourage you to report to the police if you encounter a scammer and have concrete evidence. This is to protect others from the same fate and to teach the scammer a lesson.
